from Shout! Factory

Los Angeles, CA - Step inside the inner sanctum of one of the most sharp-witted and funniest political machines ever. Meet Deputy Mayor Mike Flaherty and the quirky City Hall staff members from Spin City as they expertly spin their gaffe-prone Mayor Randall Winston and the City out of daily near-misses. From dealing with the Mayor’s problematic wife to catching a nudist roaming inside the City Hall to losing a deceased police dog just hours before the wake, this idiosyncratic office family goes the distance in this popular ensemble television comedy.

The critically acclaimed and award-winning television series Spin City draws back the curtain of this dysfunctional City Hall in the biggest city in America and provides a smart and comic take on how much it takes to keep the well-meaning but bumbling Mayor looking good. Season One of Spin City boasts a pedigreed ensemble cast including Michael J. Fox, Carla Gugino (Chicago Hope, Karen Sisco), Barry Bostwick (Law & Order: SVU), Richard Kind (Mad About You, Scrubs), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Michael Boatman (Law & Order), Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights), and Alexander Chaplin (Scrubs), alongside notable guest stars Stephen Colbert, Jennifer Garner, Woody Harrelson, Marlee Matlin, Gretchen Mol, Amanda Peet, Luke Perry, George Stephanopoulos, Courtney Thorne-Smith, George Wendt, among others.

Marking 12 years after Spin City’s initial premiere on network television, Shout! Factory will release Spin City: The Complete First Season DVD box set on November 4, 2008. Season One of the series is available for the first time ever in this 4-DVD box set containing all 24 acclaimed episodes, all-new interviews with Michael J. Fox, the series creators and the ensemble cast, 7 episode commentaries and Highlights of The Paley Center for Media Seminar featuring Gary David Goldberg and Michael J. Fox in 1996. The collectible Spin City: The Complete First Season DVD box set is priced to own at $39.99.

Spin City is a smart, sophisticated sitcom about the behind-the-scenes workings of a fictional NYC based City Hall. Workaholic Mike Flaherty (Michael J. Fox) is the Deputy Mayor of New York City, serving as Mayor Randall Winston’s (Barry Bostwick) key strategist and much-needed handler. Mike runs the city with the help of his oddball staff: an anxious and insecure press secretary (Richard Kind); a sexist, boorish chief of staff (Alan Ruck); an impeccably groomed gay activist running minority affairs (Michael Boatman); a sharp and efficient, man-crazy accountant (Connie Britton); and an idealistic young speechwriter (Alexander Chaplin). Like Mike, they are all professionally capable but personally challenged.

Created by Gary David Goldberg and Bill Lawrence, executive produced by Michael J. Fox and Gary David Goldberg, and produced by UBU Productions in association with Dreamworks Television, Spin City debuted on ABC on September 17, 1996 and received extraordinary receptions from the critics and viewers. The series reunited Fox and Family Ties executive producer and creator Gary David Goldberg and proved that the magic of their creative partnership was enduring.

Degrees and Vacations

University of B.C. LogoThe Vancouver Sun reports that Michael J. Fox will be receiving an honorary degree from the University of British Columbia, B.C.’s largest University. Read the article HERE. At the University’s official site is a complete list of honorary degree recipients.

Original Promo Art for TV GuideMore details have been released over on TV Shows on DVD about the season 4 DVD set of Family Ties. Looks like they’re continuing to include the episode promos for each episode and a blooper reel. Also - Family Ties Vacation WILL be included with the set. It doesn’t say if it will be split into four ‘episodes’ as it is treated in syndication packages or as it originally aired - a television movie. Personally, I’m hoping they include it as it originally aired.

Advance DVD Review: Family Ties - Season 2

Disc Three Main MenuHere Comes Steven’s Beard!

Paramount continues to release season sets of one of the seminal 1980’s family sitcoms and this time, they get it right.

While the stories in the first season of Family Ties were typical sitcom fare, and often hokey, it introduced us to the now iconic Keaton clan comprised of the liberal ‘flower children’ parents, Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter-Birney) and their Reagan-era children, uber-conservative Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox), uber-consumer Mallory Keaton (Justine Bateman) and uber-precocious Jennifer Keaton (Tina Yothers).

The Nasty Mr. Tedesco - he's such a smug, snotSeason two was still sometimes hokey, but the writing was noticeably better. The characters were fleshed out enough for the writers to really start to work with, manipulate and milk for all the laughs they were worth.

Several of my all-time favorite Family Ties episodes come from season two: The Harder they Fall with the nasty Mr. Tedesco, played brilliantly by Edward Edwards; Say Uncle featuring the return of Uncle Nick Donnelly played by Tom Hanks back when he was doing comedy and making us laugh our asses off; and Speed Trap, one of the first ‘very special episodes’ in which Alex becomes addicted to amphetamines and begins to literally bounce off the floors, walls and staircase of the Keaton abode.

Uncle Ned fixes himself the breakfast of championsThe season one DVD set was rather disappointing. Some scenes were cut because of music rights – and one was completely unnecessary, the music could have been replaced – and there were absolutely no extra features. The menus looked like they were designed during the early days of DVD production and the print quality of the episodes was adequate, but not great.

Paramount has done a much better job with season two. The print quality is pristine and I have yet to see any cuts because of music, even though some songs have been changed. And – wait for it – there are actual extras!

Each episode (yes, every one of them) includes the NBC promo for that particular episode. And, oh my, were 80’s promo pieces terrible. Very fun to watch.

Alex is Wrecked! Oh wait, that's a different 'very special' episodeThe thirty minute documentary The Making of Family Ties started out with all those stories we’ve heard since the mid-80’s. You know the ones – how Gary David Goldberg, the creator of the show, didn’t want Michael J. Fox at first, but was convinced by the casting director; how Justine Bateman had never acted before this show, blah blah blah. However, once they get past the old, known stories, there is some new, interesting information told by Gary David Goldberg, Michael J. Fox, Michael Gross and Tina Yothers in footage shot specifically for this DVD set. Intercut with the interviews are clips from the show and bloopers from the shooting of several episodes. The only thing missing that would have made it even better were interviews with Meredith Baxter and Justine Bateman.

Michael J. Fox: The Best Gig in the World, a short documentary about Michael J. Fox’s impact on the show, did not hold any new information, but was still interesting. The viewer gets to hear from the creator and fellow actors’ in their own words about how they and Fox dealt with his immense fame due to the release of Back to the Future in July of 1985.

The final documentary is titled The Year of the Beard. This is a short explores the appearance of Steven Keaton’s beard in season two - why Michael Gross grew it and how it impacted his character and, therefore, the show.

This set is a must-buy for any Michael J. Fox and/or 1980’s television sitcom fan.

The second full season of the hit 1980’s sitcom ‘Family Ties,’ hits the streets on October 9, 2007.

The Extra Features have also been announced. The producers were smart enough to include a feature about the most important change of season 2 - the appearance of Steven’s beard.

Some bad news - music has been altered. However, as TV Shows on DVD says, it’s a choice between changing music or never getting the episodes on dvd at all. I hate the changes but I’ll tolerate them.

Family Ties on DVD…seriously!

familytiess1.jpgA couple of years ago I reported on the site that Family Ties would be coming to DVD within the year. Well, obviously that didn’t happen.

But there has been a new release date announced and this time it looks real. Sites are already taking pre-orders!

The release date is February 20, 2007 for Region 1 and the set is averaging $40 american.

It looks like they’re releasing them by air date order, not production order.
